The Idaho State Elks Association is deeply saddened to share the passing of two of our Past State Presidents, L. Dan Rowell and Gene Maurice Phillips, both cherished members of our Elks family whose friendship, leadership, and service left a lasting mark on our organization and our communities.
L. Dan Rowell passed away on October 14, 2025. Dan was a proud Elk and Mason whose love for the Order and for Idaho was evident in all he did. In his own words, Dan shared the story of his journey with the Elks:
“I became heavily involved in the BPOE Organization, Elks, and the Masons, when I came to Idaho. The positions I have held in the Elks are: Exalted Ruler of Caldwell Lodge, District Deputy for the Grand Exalted Ruler, and his Special Representative for Idaho South. I was the Idaho State Elks Association Secretary-Treasurer, the State President, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees for three years of a five-year term. I was honored with being chosen to the Idaho State Elks Hall of Honor. I was appointed to the Idaho State Elks Rehabilitation Board of Directors and was a member of the board when the Idaho State Elks built a new 55 million dollar Rehabilitation Hospital, the only rehabilitation hospital in the Northwest. I built myself a condo next to the golf course (I’m on the golf board), and now all I do is chase girls, drink beer, and play golf! What a life! (Just what ya’ll would expect.)”
Dan’s dedication, humor, and warmth reflected the very best of what it means to be an Elk. His legacy of service and laughter will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Gene Maurice Phillips, an 83-year-old resident of Burley, passed away on September 29, 2025. Gene’s devotion to the Elks and his many years of involvement exemplified the quiet strength and steadfast spirit that define our Order. Though words cannot fully capture his kindness and service, those who knew Gene will remember his commitment to his lodge, his friends, and his community.
Together, Dan and Gene embodied the ideals of charity, justice, brotherly love, and fidelity. Their leadership helped shape the Idaho State Elks Association into what it is today, and their absence will be deeply felt across the state.
Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to share in their friendship. May they rest in peace, and may their memories continue to guide us in service and fellowship.
